The Institute for Legal Informatics (IRI) focuses on research and teaching on current issues in the field of information technologies, in particular on issues of data protection, intellectual property, electronic commerce and international law. The Institute is also distinguished by the acquisition of numerous third-party funds.

The Institute is composed of Prof. Dr. Tim W. Dornis, J.S.M. (Stanford), Prof. Dr. Jan Eichelberger, LL.M.oec., Prof. Dr. Margrit Seckelmann, M.A. and Prof. Dr. Timo Rademacher, MJur (Oxon) as well as more than 50 other employees.
